Design Intent
The renovation focuses on human scale and sensory warmth, especially within a large-volume restaurant. Through material density, layered lighting, acoustic buffering, and richer textures, the space has been recalibrated to feel more intimate without losing its energy.
This is The Bombay Canteen grown older, wiser, and more comfortable in its skin.
The Bar as a Conversation Room
The bar was redesigned as a place to linger.
Wrapped in deep merlot tones, fluted glass, and warm timber overhead, it becomes a cocooned setting within the larger space. A ghost light globe floats above, adding a quiet theatricality. The timber bar fascia and softened lighting transform it into a true conversation bar—less spectacle, more exchange.
Timber ledge walls with Art Deco lamps frame the bar zone, while antique mirrors and velvet curtains introduce softness and acoustic depth.
Arrival & Waiting
The entry desk is conceived as a whimsical piece of furniture—a playful construction inspired by Bombay’s Art Deco charm rather than a conventional reception counter.
The waiting foyer reads like a gallery space in an old Bombay home. Taxi-yellow and merlot velvet sofas are deep and lounge-like, encouraging guests to sink in and slow down before the meal begins.
Above, a suspended ceiling installation of timber and mirrors with stained-glass detailing anchors a peach terrazzo table below. The mirrored surfaces subtly reflect the activity around the table, bringing warmth and life into the centre of the restaurant.
Dining Atmosphere
Lighting is carefully layered throughout. Dramatic focal lighting highlights dining tables and the bar, while soft ambient glows from table lamps create intimacy. Grazing lights skim across the stone masonry walls, revealing texture and depth rather than flattening surfaces.
Acoustic buffering has been subtly introduced to soften the room, allowing conversation to feel effortless even at peak hours.
Art, Memory & Bombay
Art and craft remain integral to the space. Installations by Sam Kulavoor add a graphic, contemporary counterpoint, while ceramic plates with blue-glazed illustrations celebrate everyday Bombay—its streets, habits, and recognisable motifs.
These elements reinforce the restaurant’s original intent: to be deeply rooted in the city while constantly evolving with it.
The Spirit of the Renovation
This renovation is about bringing warmth to a beloved institution—making space for longer conversations, softer moments, and deeper comfort. It respects the past while tuning the space to how people dine, gather, and linger today.
