Flying House

Devghar, Lonavla
2019
Rushang Shah
87,120 sq ft

Flying House is sited dramatically on the ridgeline of the Sahyadri hills, overlooking sweeping valley views. The five-bedroom holiday home unfolds linearly along a 75-meter north-south axis. A monumental copper slate-clad western wall anchors the house, shielding it from harsh winds and rain, while shimmering at sunset. Facing east, the decks and living spaces remain habitable throughout the year.

Two distinct blocks — one single-level volume housing social spaces, the other a two-storey private wing — are bridged by an infinity pool and continuous deck. Large glazed doors slide open to dissolve boundaries between inside and outside, extending the social heart of the house into its dramatic setting.

The folded metal roofscape crowns the ridge, echoing the silhouette of the ghats. Its planes float above exposed brick and concrete structures, cantilevering to shelter decks and respond to monsoon rains. Textured limestone floors and bespoke detailing carry elemental tactility throughout. This home, robust yet open, embodies LAB’s philosophy of fluid, landscape-driven architecture — where building and terrain coalesce into one seamless experience.
