In Orchard House, an orchard planted fifty years ago becomes the generative framework of the home. Instead of aligning with site boundaries, setbacks are derived from the trees themselves, creating a new spatial grid. Built forms are carefully sited in the voids, leaving the orchard intact as a living framework.
The house unfolds as long, narrow blocks linked by walkways. Rooms wrap around trees, creating shaded courtyards and passages that heighten awareness of nature. Preserving the integrity of the orchard, the architecture becomes a way of engaging more deeply with landscape. Orchard House reflects LAB’s ethos of spatial sensitivity — where the act of enclosure creates opportunity for connection with the living environment.
Humour, Joy and Craft spin the design dial for this house.
